The complete text of William Shakespeare's classic play, unedited and unabridged, performed as a comedy by an adorable cartoon cast. Perfect for students having trouble with the text, or anyone who enjoys seeing old favorites reimagined in new ways.
Stick Figure Hamlet eBook Dan Carroll William Shakespeare
Renditions of Hamlet usually editorialize Shakespeare's work, the exceptions being Braunaugh's 4-hour movie version and, now, Carroll's comics version. And while the idea of stick-figures may seem reductive in a visual way, there is a surprising amount of enjoyment in the book. Whether it is Laertes' efforts to remain patient during his father's lecture, or the cameo appearance of Bambi at King Hamlet's wonted place of repose, the illustrations make contributions to the read.In contrast, for a text that emphasizes text of the play, this graphic novel would have been well served with one more editor's eyes to check for mispellings and incorrect punctuation. Likewise, it would be nice to know which version of the play Carroll used.
But, above this level of small details, the book stands strong, even correcting my misperception of who is present on stage during the "To be or not to be..." soliloquy. And the look of confusion on the stick-figure faces of Polonius and Claudius during this impassioned speech---priceless.

Stick Figure Hamlet eBook Dan Carroll William Shakespeare Reviews
So much gets done with a few simple shapes. Some very funny parts - hiding Polonius in the suit of armor, for example. This is the full text of Hamlet, and it is wordy, but it's easy to follow. It's nice when clever people use humor to enhance learning.
The problem with reworkings of classics, generally speaking, is that the authors of such things feel the need to take a "bold new direction" that often involves sweeping changes to important things that made the classic so popular in the first place. Dan Carroll, thankfully, avoids this mistake, and keeps all the original text of Shakespeare's masterpiece in tact.
What he adds to the mix, however, is a plethora of wonderfully evocative stick figure illustrations. In spite of being fairly simple drawings, they convey the moods of the play perfectly, from Hamlet's furrowed brow to Ophelia's madness to the comic relief of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern (who, in this volume, bear a suspicious resemblance to Bert and Ernie).
Hamlet was not meant to be read. It was meant to be seen. And while some may be tempted to write this book off as a way to make Hamlet more interesting to younger readers (which, make no mistake it is), the fact of the matter is that Carroll's treatment draws out some of the visual nature of the play that you simply don't get from reading text alone. Hilarious textless interludes highlight some of the interactions between characters.
Highly recommended.
clever idea . I was disappointed that so many panels were on each page
it made reading difficult .very creative.
